Wellington Celebrates its Regional Community Sporting Champions
At the 2026 Āti Awa Toa Wellington Regional Sports Awards, the spotlight fell on the people whose commitment, Leading the celebrations




were iwi award recipients Melisa Tupuivao, recognised for her extraordinary contribution to softball and international sporting career, Len Hetet, whose cultural leadership has strengthened identity and belonging across communities, and Yvanni Gibson. Toa Waka Ama and Te Kapa Haka o Pukeatua were also honoured for showcasing the power of culture, community and collective excellence.
Community impact remained a defining theme throughout the night. Krystal Nikara, Jo Allen, Petone Rowing Club and Wellington Samoa Kirikiti Association were recognised for breaking down barriers to participation and creating opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to engage in sport, recreation and wellbeing. Their initiatives are changing lives, strengthening communities and ensuring more Wellingtonians can enjoy the benefits of physical activity.
The region's unsung heroes also received their moment in the spotlight. Volunteer of the Year Matt Warren was recognised for more than three decades of service to surf lifesaving and canoe sprinting, while Officials of the Year La Winitana and Zac Prendergast were celebrated for reaching new heights in rugby league and cycling officiating. Their dedication helps ensure sport continues to thrive from grassroots level to the world stage.
Excellence in coaching and leadership was highlighted through the achievements of Gary Gibson, Thomas Makea and Robyn Morete, whose work continues to inspire athletes, grow participation and strengthen sporting pathways throughout the region and across Aotearoa.
Winners across 12 award category's including the Legends of Wellington inductees will be announced Thursday 20th August at Wellington College, a premier night of sporting celebration.
12 award categories recognising athletes, teams, clubs, volunteers, officials and coaches that celebrate the contribution that sport makes to the Wellington region.
Formerly known as the Wellington Sport and Recreation Awards, this regional event has been running for over 41 years.
