Congratulations to all of the
winners at the 2010 Dominion Post Sportsperson of the Year Awards. Previous years have seen many well
known New Zealand sports stars take out various categories at the
Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards and this year was no different.
Below
is a list of the 2010 Winners and Finalists for each of the categories.
Sportsperson
of
the
Year 2010 Winner - Ricki Herbert
(Football)
Ricki Herbert has
played an instrumental role in lifting the profile of football in New Zealand.
Through sheer determination and passion, Ricki has helped bring Football
into
the New Zealand
sporting spotlight once again. As part of the 1982 World Cup team Ricki
knew
what it was like to be part of a successful team unit, and now as coach,
he has
created two successful football teams in New Zealand, the Wellington
Phoenix
and the New Zealand All Whites. The Wellington Phoenix became the most
successful NZ team to play in the Australian football League, making the
Preliminary finals. He has also created an All Whites team that has a
determination
and energy about it that hasn’t been seen in many years. He is respected
by the
New Zealand
public, his players, and the media. This was clearly shown when his All
Whites
team played Bahrain
and
filled the Westpac stadium, attracting a record crowd for an All Whites
game in
New Zealand.
